Did Cisco change the future of Quantum Computing

Cisco’s new quantum switch could be a major step toward connecting quantum computers into scalable quantum networks. This video explains why that matters, how it solves the N-squared connection problem, and why quantum networking could affect encryption and cybersecurity.

Cisco has announced a new Universal Quantum Switch designed to route quantum information between quantum systems while preserving it. This matters because quantum computers today are still limited, often sitting around 100 to 1000 qubits, while practical real-world quantum computing may require hundreds of thousands or even millions of physical qubits.
Instead of only trying to build one massive quantum computer, Cisco is working on a scale-out approach: connecting multiple quantum computers together through a quantum network. The problem is that direct point-to-point connections between quantum computers create an N-squared scaling problem. Four systems need 12 connections. Ten systems need 90. One hundred systems need 9,900. That does not scale.
Cisco’s quantum switch is designed to solve this by acting like a central switch for quantum systems, similar in concept to how classical network switches connect computers in a traditional network. But this is much harder because quantum information is fragile. The switch must preserve quantum information while routing it between systems.

The announcement is especially interesting because Cisco says the switch can operate at room temperature, over existing fiber, and at telecom frequencies. It also includes a conversion engine that can translate between different quantum encoding modalities, including polarization, time bin, frequency bin, and path. That means quantum systems that were not originally designed to talk to each other could potentially be connected
through the same quantum network.

This video explains why Cisco’s quantum switch matters, how it could help scale quantum computing, what problem it solves, and why quantum networking could eventually affect cybersecurity, encryption, RSA, high-frequency trading, quantum sensors, and future distributed quantum computing.

This is still a proof of concept rather than a product you can buy today, but it is a major step toward scalable quantum networks and the future of quantum computing.
